Envision a Bluer New York

Roller-coasters, mermaids, hot dogs galore. The 11 million people who come to Coney Island each year know these local treasures well. But just off the Boardwalk, there are other, less familiar ones. Sea turtles, sharks, and harbor seals. Deep-sea canyons and soaring seamounts. As the New York Aquarium begins a new chapter in its history, we are bringing New Yorkers up-close to the ocean wonders in our own backyard, connecting both sides of the Boardwalk like never before.

Here at the New York Aquarium, Hurricane Sandy ravaged our exhibits and infrastructure, but it also spurred a new chapter in our history.

Reopening

As we continue along the path to recovery, the outpouring of local support inspires us to achieve the aquarium experience that the people—and marine life—of New York City deserve.

Reopening

There was a big crowd and lots of love as we reopened 7 months after Sandy struck. The New York Aquarium remains the only Coney Island attraction open year-round.

Build the Next Chapter

After Hurricane Sandy struck our shores in October 2012, many New Yorkers saw themselves as coastal citizens for the first time. Today, as we continue to recover from the storm's impacts and prepare for the future, the city is coming together to rally for smarter coastal planning, renewable energy solutions, and marine conservation. The New York Aquarium is poised to play a pivotal role in building a stronger, more resilient New York.

Wrapping the entire exterior of Ocean Wonders: Sharks! is the shimmer wall, a mesmerizing work of art. Its individual metal tiles use wind and reflective sunlight to create a fluid, glittering surface reminiscent of schooling fish and ocean waves.

The shimmer wall will be the centerpiece of our transformation, a beacon to the millions of visitors inspired by our marine treasures and dazzling shoreline. We invite you to be part of the transformation.
