California Sea Lion
The loudest voices in the ocean may be the gregarious sea lion. Though clumsy on land, this marine mammal is a strong swimmer and diver, aided by its oar-like flippers and torpedo-shaped body. Sea lions are considered “pinnipeds,” which means “fin-footed” and refers to their long, flat hands and feet.
The Pacific walrus may be a ton of blubber, but it’s also a ton of brains. Among fellow members of the pinniped, or “fin-footed” family of marine mammals, it is among the largest and the smartest. Highly social animals, walruses make devoted parents, affectionate mates, and even talented musicians!
True to its name, the sea otter can spend its entire life at sea. It eats, sleeps, hunts, mates, and gives birth in the water. To stay warm in the cold ocean, the sea otter has the thickest fur of any animal. It also must eat a lot—up to a quarter of its body weight each day!
